Alright, on to the good stuff. Do essential oils kill spiders? Is there a magic essential oil spider spray? No and yes. Essential oils can kill small spiders in high concentration, but this is super inefficient and potentially a no-go if you come from a no-kill household. If you are trying to kill a spider with essential oils, I would recommend a Kleenex or shoe instead. However, essential oils are excellent at repelling and deterring spiders from being out and about in your home! So yes, there is an essential oil spider spray and most of the time it works like magic!
In fact, there are a bunch of essential oil spider sprays. It is important to remember that these sprays will only repel and deter spiders from coming around…out of sight, out of mind. In addition, probably one of the biggest advantages to using essential oils to repel spiders is that you know exactly what is in your home. No carcinogenic chemicals lying around that could cause cancer to your pet or health issues for your family.
The most effective spider repellent essential oils are: 1) Lavender, 2) Peppermint, and 3) Citrus Oils (tea tree, neem, and others work as well). Fortunately, these spider spray essential oils are among the most common and affordable!
Making the Essential Oil Spider Spray
1) Grab your 16 oz amber glass bottle from your set.
2) Grab Peppermint and Lavender OR any citrus oil (tangerine, orange, lemon, etc.) You always want to have peppermint in the spray due to its effectiveness and then select ONE from the others. If you mix three or more, your spray will be less effective due to the dilution. Adding just one oil to your spider spray maintains its effectiveness and allows you to have varying scents depending on your preference (orange is our favorite!).
3) Fill the bottle halfway with water (tap works fine, but filtered is always better).
4) Add 25 drops of Peppermint (13 if you are using the 8 oz).
5) Add 50 drops of your oil of choice (25 if you are using the 8 oz).
6) Add just a squirt of dish soap in there (blue Dawn is our favorite, but any will work).
7) Fill the rest of the bottle with water.
8) Shake hardily and you now have your essential oils spider spray! Repelling spiders with essential oils has never been easier!
How to Apply
You want to apply your essential oils spider repellent along points of entry with a liberal coat. For example, if you have screen doors and windows, spray liberally along the base of the windows and door, BOTH inside and out. Our definition of a liberal spray is once you spray, you should be able to slightly smell the oils; it is not like febreze or a candle, it will be very subtle. A subtle scent to you is a powerful one to a small spider! This first spray is to stop spiders and other insects from coming into your house. Reapply every 3 days for maximum effectiveness.
Next, you will want to head to the basement and other sparsely visited areas of your home. Do NOT just start spraying the walls randomly where you have seen spiders before as this will not do anything to repel spiders, just make your walls wet and smelling great! Areas where spiders like to hang out, such as the corners of walls, windows, open holes in the ceiling, any gaps in the baseboards, etc. should receive a very liberal coat of spray. Again, reapply every 3 days for maximum effectiveness.
This essential oil spider spray will not eliminate you ever seeing a spider in your house again. However, we have used these recipes in a 1200 sq ft apartment and a 1700 sq ft country home and subjectively have seen 90% less spiders since we started spraying. The spiders are not gone, but you will not see them very frequently. If you do not reapply, then you will start to see them come back. Experiment with the various essential oils spider spray recipe combinations to see which scent you like best!
You may have heard different things about different essential oils, but in our opinion doTERRA has the highest quality product. Their oils tend to be a bit pricier, but they are extremely effective and we have never had any issues with their performance.
