Essential Oils to Improve Sleep

One of the many beneficial uses for essential oils is their ability to improve sleep. Essential oils for better sleep is a much healthier alternative to guzzling down pharmaceutical pills. In this article, we will cover essential oils for sleep improvement. Our recommendation for the use of essential oils for better sleep is to diffuse them using aromatherapy or construct a sleep spray that you use each night before bed.

Lavender

Lavender ($30.67 on Amazon) is probably the most popular and widely know essential oil for better sleep. However, that reputation comes from a good reason. Lavender has been shown to consistently have a sedative effect, meaning it can help you fall asleep each night. In addition, lavender essential oil has been used for better sleep by improving sleep quality and sleep amounts. Lavender is the primary ingredient in many of our aromatherapy sleep diffusing recipes and our sleep spray!

Bergamot

Bergamot ($40 on Amazon) is a much lesser known essential oil for improving sleep quality. While lavender is an essential oil for falling asleep and staying asleep, Bergamot has only been proven to improve sleep quality. Luckily, this makes it an excellent teammate for lavender! With Bergamot’s lovely citrus scent, diffusing for sleep improvement is one of the best uses for this essential oil.

Vanilla

While Vanilla ($16.95 on Amazon) is not the heavyweight in essential oils sleep improvement that Lavender and Bergamot are, it has been shown to reduce restlessness, reduce stress, and have a mild sedative effect. Uses for essential oils such as vanilla are pretty limitless, but it provides a lovely bonus scent in a diffusing recipe and an essential oils sleep misting spray!

Others

There are other essential oils that have claimed to improve sleep and plenty of other websites listing tens of essential oils for sleep improvement. However, these three essential oils are the only ones we were able to find definitive, scientific proof that they have a positive effect on sleep improvement. This does not mean that other essential oils do not improve sleep, just that we recommend what is scientifically known at this time!

doTERRA Serenity

If you don’t want to mess with your own essential oils for improving sleep, then doTERRA sells a custom blend of essential oils for sleep improvement called Serenity ($41.67 on Amazon). Serenity is primarily meant to be diffused, but you could add it into an essential oils sleep spray as well. We personally prefer to build our own essential oils products because we can customize the scent in a way that works for us, but this is certainly an easier option if you just want to drop it in your diffuser and drift off!
